Nerve block trial aims to tame brain Injury's dangerous storms

NCT ID NCT06354673

Summary

This study tested two treatment combinations to calm 'neurostorming,' a dangerous overactive stress response that can happen after a severe traumatic brain injury. Researchers compared a nerve block in the neck (stellate ganglion block) given with one of two sedative drugs, dexmedetomidine or ketamine, in 205 critically ill patients. The goal was to see which combination worked better to quickly reduce storm symptoms like high heart rate and fever, improve consciousness, and shorten time in the intensive care unit.
