New shoulder block may prevent breathing muscle paralysis after surgery

NCT ID NCT07486349

First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests if a newer type of nerve block (shoulder PENG block) causes less paralysis of the diaphragm—the main breathing muscle—compared to the standard block (interscalene block) in people having shoulder surgery. About 70 adults will receive one of the two blocks, and doctors will measure diaphragm movement with ultrasound 30 minutes later. The goal is to find a safer way to numb the shoulder without affecting breathing.
