New nerve block slashes opioid use in kidney stone surgery

Summary
This study tested a nerve block called anterior quadratus lumborum block (QLB) to reduce pain and opioid use in 54 adults having kidney stone surgery. Patients who got the block needed less pain medicine during and after surgery and had lower pain scores. The block did not affect nausea or overall recovery quality at 24 hours.
