Nerve block may cut opioid needs after hysterectomy
NCT ID NCT07046949
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a nerve block called the anterior quadratus lumborum block, given before surgery, can reduce pain and the need for opioids in women undergoing abdominal hysterectomy. 56 participants were randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block plus standard care or standard care alone. The researchers measured pain levels, opioid use, and recovery quality after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
anterior quadratus lumborum block (a nerve block injection)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to reduce pain and opioid use after hysterectomy, leading to faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 56 participants. The nerve block may not actually reduce pain or opioid needs, and results may not apply to all patients.
