New study tests tool to spot High-Risk ICU seniors

NCT ID NCT07007156

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether the NECPAL scale can help predict which older adults (75+) admitted to the ICU are more likely to die within 90 days. Researchers will follow 199 patients and compare those with a positive NECPAL result to those without. The goal is to improve care planning, not to test a treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify older ICU patients who may need extra care or palliative support early on.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The scale may not accurately predict outcomes for all patients, and results may not apply to other hospitals.
