Neck block could cut opioid use after spine surgery

NCT ID NCT05996133

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a numbing injection in the neck muscles can reduce pain and opioid use after cervical spine fusion surgery. Thirty-eight adults scheduled for the surgery will receive either the active block or a sham injection. Researchers will compare pain scores and medication use over the first 24 hours and beyond.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine with dexamethasone and epinephrine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a better way to manage pain after neck surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers like opioids.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 38 people, so results may not apply widely. The block may not reduce pain more than the sham procedure.
