Simple nose spray may keep kids breathing easy during surgery
NCT ID NCT07000877
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a nasal decongestant spray given before anesthesia can reduce breathing complications in children aged 1 to 8 who have a cold and need surgery. Two hundred children will receive either the active spray or a placebo, and doctors will monitor for issues like coughing, airway blockage, or low oxygen. The goal is to find a simple, low-risk way to make anesthesia safer for kids with upper respiratory infections.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oxymetazoline hydrochloride (0.05%) nasal spray
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple nasal spray could become a standard way to reduce breathing problems in children with colds who need surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not apply to all children. The spray might not reduce complications significantly compared to a placebo.
