First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tested whether a left stellate ganglion block (a nerve block near the neck) given before mitral valve replacement surgery could protect the heart muscle from damage. 62 adults undergoing elective on-pump mitral valve replacement were included. Researchers looked at heart tissue under a microscope for signs of injury, as well as heart function and blood markers. The goal was to see if this simple procedure could reduce heart damage during surgery.
