Soothing sounds: could music cut drug use in ICU?

NCT ID NCT05602662

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether listening to music can reduce the amount of sedative drugs needed by ICU patients on breathing machines. One hundred adults will be randomly assigned to wear headphones with or without music for one hour, twice a day. Researchers will track heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and sedative doses to see if music makes a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Music therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to calm ICU patients on ventilators, potentially reducing side effects from sedatives.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 100 patients. The effect may be small or not apply to all ICU patients. Music might not reduce sedation needs for everyone.
