Simple scan could reveal hidden surgery risks in older patients

NCT ID NCT05412095

Summary

This study tested whether a simple, radiation-free ultrasound scan of a patient's thigh and breathing muscles, taken before major heart or lung surgery, could help predict their risk of serious complications after the operation. Researchers enrolled 301 patients aged 65 and older to see if lower muscle mass was linked to problems like kidney failure, infections, or breathing issues. The goal was to find a better way to assess a patient's strength and recovery potential before surgery.
