Smart radiation aims to zap liver tumors with fewer side effects

NCT ID NCT05027711

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of radiation therapy for people with up to 3 small liver tumors that have spread from another cancer. One method uses standard planning, while the other uses daily MRI scans to adjust the radiation beam in real time. The goal is to see if the MRI-guided approach causes fewer serious side effects while still controlling the tumors. About 90 adults will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Radiation therapy (MR-guided adaptive SBRT or standard ITV-based SBRT)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that MR-guided adaptive radiotherapy reduces side effects and improves tumor control for people with liver metastases.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial with only 90 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The new technique is more complex and may not always be better than standard treatment.
