Could an asthma drug help heal hearts after a heart attack?
NCT ID NCT07537868
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether montelukast, a common asthma drug, can reduce inflammation and limit heart muscle damage in people who have just had a heart attack. Eighty adults aged 30-75 will receive either montelukast or a placebo for 4 weeks. Researchers will measure changes in blood markers of inflammation and heart injury to see if the drug offers any protective benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Montelukast 10 mg oral tablet
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new, inexpensive way to limit heart damage and improve recovery after a heart attack.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. Montelukast is not proven for heart conditions, and the results may not lead to a new treatment. There is also a risk of side effects like headache or allergic reactions.
