New stitching method may speed up gallstone surgery

NCT ID NCT07345663

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 360 patients who had gallstone removal surgery with a T-tube drain. Doctors compared a new continuous stitching method to the traditional interrupted stitch for closing the bile duct. The goal was to see which method is faster and just as safe. Results could help surgeons choose the best technique.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

modified continuous suture (using barbed polydioxanone sutures) versus interrupted suture

What this could lead to

If the modified continuous suture is faster and just as safe, it could become the preferred method for closing the bile duct during laparoscopic stone removal surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a retrospective observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient selection. The findings are about surgical technique, not a new treatment for the disease itself.
