Rolling hospital room: could a mobile diagnostic unit slash nursing home hospitalisations?
NCT ID NCT07634757
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a Mobile Geriatric Unit (MGU) — a van equipped with a CT scanner, X-ray, ultrasound, and other diagnostic tools — can reduce hospitalisations for nursing home residents. The MGU brings on-site diagnostics and telemedicine specialist consultations, allowing many conditions to be assessed and treated without a trip to the hospital. Researchers will compare hospital admission rates during a 12-month period without the MGU to a 12-month period with it, involving nearly 5,000 residents.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Mobile Geriatric Unit (on-site diagnostics and telemedicine)
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could reduce unnecessary hospital trips for nursing home residents, keeping them comfortable in familiar surroundings.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational before-after study, not a randomised trial, so results may be influenced by other changes over time. The mobile unit may not be feasible or cost-effective in all settings.
