Ancient chewing stick may beat toothbrush for gum health

NCT ID NCT07599397

First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This early study will test whether using a miswak chewing stick (from the Salvadora persica plant) can reduce gum inflammation better than a regular toothbrush in people with moderate gum disease (periodontitis). Researchers will measure inflammatory markers in gum fluid from 24 adults over 3 months. The goal is to see if this natural alternative could help control gum disease.
