Summary

This study tests a program called MINDSET for veterans who have chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes and continue to smoke or drink heavily despite brief advice from their doctor. The program sends a personalized education packet by mail followed by a short motivational phone call. Researchers will measure whether this approach increases veterans' readiness to change their habits and reduces their smoking and alcohol use over time.
