Tiny probe tracks antibiotics in hip joint to fight infection

NCT ID NCT07299591

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study uses a technique called microdialysis to measure antibiotic levels directly inside the hip joint after surgery for an infected hip replacement. Researchers want to see how well local antibiotics from a cement spacer work and compare them to levels in the blood. The goal is to learn how to prevent reinfection and improve recovery over 12 months. The study involves 30 adults undergoing two-stage hip revision surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

antibiotic-containing cement spacer (gentamicin and vancomycin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better understand how to prevent reinfection after hip replacement surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It does not test a new treatment.
