Could a common arthritis drug replace risky steroids for leprosy pain?

NCT ID NCT03775460

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tests whether methotrexate, a low-cost drug, can help control Erythema Nodosum Leprosum (ENL)—a painful complication of leprosy—while reducing the need for high-dose steroids that cause serious side effects. About 550 adults with active ENL will receive either methotrexate plus prednisolone or prednisolone alone. The goal is to see if methotrexate keeps ENL flares away longer and with less steroid use.
