Common diabetes drug could slow devastating kidney disease

Summary

This large global trial is testing whether metformin, a widely used and affordable diabetes medication, can slow the decline of kidney function in people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The study will enroll 1,174 adults with early-stage ADPKD to see if taking metformin for two years slows disease progression better than a placebo. The goal is to find a new, effective treatment option to help patients maintain kidney function longer and improve their quality of life.
