Common diabetes drug tested to fight mouth scarring
NCT ID NCT06871904
Summary
This study tested whether two existing drugs, metformin (a diabetes medication) and pirfenidone (an anti-scarring drug), could help treat oral submucous fibrosis—a chronic condition that causes scarring in the mouth and can limit mouth opening. Researchers first tested the drugs on cells in a lab to understand how they work, then conducted a small clinical trial with 45 patients to see if the treatments improved symptoms. The goal was to find a more affordable and effective way to control this progressive condition.
