Could a diabetes drug tame asthma in overweight kids?
NCT ID NCT07622290
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether metformin, a common diabetes medicine, can help control asthma in overweight or obese children aged 10 to 17. About 182 participants will receive either metformin or a placebo for 26 weeks, in addition to their usual asthma care. Researchers will measure changes in asthma control scores, lung function, and how often asthma attacks occur.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Metformin (extended-release 500 mg tablet)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to improve asthma control in overweight and obese children by adding metformin to their standard asthma treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (182 participants) and has not yet started recruiting. Metformin is not a standard asthma drug, so it may not improve asthma control or could cause side effects like stomach upset.
