Alzheimer's drug repurposed to calm racing hearts

NCT ID NCT06501638

Summary

This study tested whether memantine, a drug used for Alzheimer's disease, could safely reduce frequent and bothersome early heartbeats (premature atrial contractions). 256 adults with these symptoms wore heart monitors and were randomly assigned to take either memantine or a placebo pill for six weeks. Researchers measured if the drug reduced the number of early beats and improved patients' quality of life.
