Melatonin timing matters: study tests if earlier is better for sleep

NCT ID NCT07514507

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether taking melatonin earlier in the evening (3 hours before bed) or at a higher dose (4 mg) helps healthy adults fall asleep faster and sleep better. Fourteen participants will try different combinations of melatonin and placebo while their sleep is measured with brain wave monitoring. The goal is to find the most effective timing and dose for improving sleep.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Melatonin

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward better timing and dosing recommendations for melatonin to improve sleep in healthy people.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study in healthy adults without sleep problems, so results may not apply to people with sleep disorders. The effects may be subtle or not meaningful in real life.
