First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a type of talking therapy called Mentalization-Based Treatment for Children (MBT-C) can help foster children aged 7 to 12 better recognize and regulate their emotions. Thirty children with emotional or behavioral difficulties were randomly assigned to receive 12 therapy sessions or no therapy. The therapy focuses on helping children understand their own and others' feelings. Early results suggest improvements in emotional awareness and regulation that lasted two months.

Mentalization-Based Treatment for Children (MBT-C)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a practical therapy to help foster children build emotional skills and resilience.

What could go wrong

This is a small early study with only 30 children, so results may not apply to all foster kids. The control group got no therapy, which may overstate benefits.
