Scientists deliberately infect volunteers with malaria to study immune defenses

NCT ID NCT04083508

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study aims to see if it is safe and feasible to deliberately infect healthy volunteers with the malaria parasite (P. vivax) through mosquito bites. Researchers will monitor how the immune system responds and collect infected blood to use in future studies. Six healthy Thai adults aged 20-55 with specific blood traits will participate. The goal is to better understand malaria and develop tools for future research, not to treat or cure the disease.
