Gentler lung scans may spare tiny babies from radiation

NCT ID NCT06975189

First seen Apr 17, 2026 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study tests whether using lung ultrasound instead of chest X-rays can safely reduce radiation exposure in very preterm babies (born before 32 weeks) who need breathing support in the NICU. About 180 infants will be randomly assigned to get either lung ultrasound or standard chest X-rays for the first two weeks after birth. The goal is to see if ultrasound is a quick, safe, and accurate alternative that can lower the number of X-rays these fragile babies receive.
