Ultrasound-Guided ventilation may shorten time on ventilator for ARDS patients

NCT ID NCT04966624

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new ventilation strategy for patients with a specific type of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) called focal ARDS. The strategy uses lung ultrasound to guide ventilator settings, early prone positioning, and adjustments based on body mass index. The goal is to see if this approach reduces the number of days patients need a ventilator compared to standard care. The trial plans to enroll 84 adults who have been on a ventilator for less than 24 hours.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ventilation strategy using APRV mode, early prone sessions, and PEEP adjustment based on BMI

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reduce the number of days patients with focal ARDS need a ventilator, potentially improving recovery and reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (84 participants) testing a bundle of measures. Previous similar research failed to show a survival benefit, and the approach may not work for all patients.
