New MRI method could spare kids with chronic cough from risky tests and too many antibiotics

NCT ID NCT07545304

First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests a safe, radiation-free MRI technique to see blockages in the lungs of children aged 5–17 with protracted bacterial bronchitis (a long-lasting wet cough). By having children breathe in a special gas (xenon) during the scan, doctors can spot mucus plugs that other tests miss. The goal is to diagnose the condition earlier and more accurately, so children can get the right treatment and avoid unnecessary antibiotics and invasive procedures.
