Could a common blood pressure drug lower uric acid in kids with kidney problems?

NCT ID NCT05402397

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether losartan, a blood pressure medicine, can lower uric acid levels in children with proteinuric nephropathies (kidney disease with protein in urine). Forty children already taking enalapril were randomly assigned to receive either losartan or continue enalapril for 30 days, then switched after a washout period. Researchers measured uric acid in blood and urine to see if losartan made a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Losartan potassium

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that losartan helps manage uric acid levels in children with kidney disease, offering a potential additional treatment option.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 40 children, and it focuses on a lab marker (uric acid) rather than long-term health outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients.
