New painkiller may prevent sudden severe pain after shoulder surgery

NCT ID NCT07196631

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether a long-acting form of the painkiller bupivacaine (liposomal bupivacaine) could prevent the sudden, severe pain that often occurs after a shoulder nerve block wears off. 100 adults having shoulder arthroscopy were randomly assigned to receive either liposomal bupivacaine or the standard drug ropivacaine. The main goal was to see if liposomal bupivacaine reduced the chance of this 'rebound pain' in the first 24 hours after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

liposomal bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a longer-lasting pain block after shoulder surgery, reducing the sudden severe pain that often occurs when the initial anesthetic wears off.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed phase 4 trial with only 100 participants. Previous studies have shown mixed results, so the benefit may be modest or not clinically significant.
