First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested whether a daily 1-minute group laughter exercise, called Laughie, could improve well-being in 20 earthquake survivors in Türkiye. Participants joined virtual sessions for 14 days and also practiced laughing with a recording twice a day. Researchers measured enjoyment, feasibility, and changes in well-being using questionnaires. The study is small and early-stage, but aims to see if this simple, free activity could help people feel better after trauma.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Laughie (Laugh Intentionally Everyday) - a behavioral intervention involving guided intentional laughter exercises in daily virtual group sessions

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to boost well-being in people who have survived a traumatic event like an earthquake.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 20 participants and no control group, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is very brief (1 minute per session) and may not produce lasting benefits.
