Laser zaps away orthodontic pain in small trial

NCT ID NCT07456709

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether low-level laser therapy can reduce pain caused by orthodontic separators (rubber bands placed between teeth before braces). Thirty-one adults received different laser doses on three sides of their mouth and a fake treatment on the fourth side. Pain levels were tracked over 72 hours using a scale from 0 to 100. The goal was to see if laser therapy offers real pain relief compared to placebo.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

low-level laser therapy (980 nm GaAlAs diode laser)

What this could lead to

If effective, this could offer a quick, non-drug way to ease pain after getting orthodontic separators.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 31 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and the pain relief might be modest or no better than placebo.
