Milk protein could end antibiotic overuse for common vaginal infections

NCT ID NCT05434104

First seen Mar 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 15, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tests whether lactoferrin, a natural prebiotic from cow's milk, can be an effective alternative to antibiotic tablets for women with bacterial vaginosis or thrush. About 114 women will be randomly assigned to use either lactoferrin vaginal pessaries or standard oral antibiotics/antifungals. The goal is to see if lactoferrin is acceptable, works well, and could help reduce antibiotic resistance.
