Tiny probe to track antibiotics in knee joint after infection surgery
NCT ID NCT07299565
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study uses a technique called microdialysis to measure antibiotic levels inside the knee joint after surgery for a knee replacement infection. Researchers will place a tiny probe in the joint to collect fluid samples during the hospital stay (about 14 days). They want to see how local antibiotic levels relate to infection recurrence and overall recovery over 12 months. The study involves 30 adults undergoing two-stage revision surgery for an infected knee replacement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antibiotic-containing cement spacer (gentamicin and vancomycin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors better understand how antibiotics work in the joint after surgery, potentially leading to improved treatment protocols for knee infections.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study with only 30 participants. It is not testing a new treatment, so it may not directly lead to better outcomes for patients.
