Ultra-Runners' kidneys under the microscope: new study aims to prevent Race-Day injury
NCT ID NCT07519408
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will follow 30 runners in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile race, to see how their kidneys handle the extreme stress. Researchers will use sensitive urine tests to detect early signs of kidney injury and test whether a sodium bicarbonate supplement can help. The goal is to better understand and reduce kidney risks for endurance athletes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Sodium Bicarbonate (dietary supplement) and Placebo
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help identify risk factors for kidney stress during extreme endurance events and guide safer training and medical practices.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all runners. The supplement tested may not reduce kidney injury as hoped.
