Can a ketone drink boost a failing heart in sepsis?
NCT ID NCT06952140
First seen Mar 12, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 9 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a ketone ester drink can improve heart function in people with sepsis who develop a weak heart muscle (cardiomyopathy). Sepsis is a severe response to infection that can damage organs. The heart may use ketones more efficiently than sugar for energy. In this small, early trial, 12 ICU patients will receive either the ketone drink or a placebo to see if it helps the heart pump better and improves blood flow.
