New drug combo may prevent dangerous blood pressure drops during anesthesia in seniors

NCT ID NCT07002073

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested two different drug mixtures—Ketodex and Ketofol—to see which one causes fewer dangerous drops in blood pressure when putting elderly patients (over 65) to sleep for surgery. 102 participants having non-cardiac surgery were randomly assigned to receive one of the two mixtures. The main goal was to measure how often blood pressure fell too low from the start of anesthesia until 16 minutes after breathing tube placement.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ketamine-dexmedetomidine (Ketodex) and propofol-ketamine (Ketofol) drug mixtures

What this could lead to

If one mixture causes fewer dangerous drops in blood pressure, it could become a safer way to put elderly patients to sleep for surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 102 participants, so results may not apply to all elderly patients or surgeries. The drugs themselves can still cause side effects like low blood pressure or slow heart rate.
