Can a milk protein help women absorb more iron?

NCT ID NCT07394972

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether wrapping lactoferrin, a natural protein in milk, in a protective coating helps women with low iron absorb more iron from their food. Forty-five women with low iron stores but no anemia will eat labeled iron with different forms of lactoferrin. Researchers will measure how much iron gets into their blood to see which method works best.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lactoferrin (a milk protein) with iron

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward more effective iron supplements for people with iron deficiency.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 45 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The different formulations may not show clear differences in iron absorption.
