Can a common asthma drug help kids with exercise breathing problems?

NCT ID NCT07394036

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a single dose of ipratropium bromide, a drug often used for asthma, can reduce shortness of breath during exercise in 50 children and teens with Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO). Participants will inhale the drug or a placebo before intense exercise, and researchers will measure their breathlessness and throat obstruction. The goal is to see if this treatment can make exercise easier for kids with this condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ipratropium bromide

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment to reduce breathlessness during exercise for children with EILO.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 50 participants. The drug may not work better than placebo, and results may not apply to all children with EILO.
