Pill power: early oral antibiotics may replace IV drips for blood infections

NCT ID NCT05199324

First seen Apr 17, 2026 · Last updated Jun 06, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tests whether stable hospital patients with a Gram-negative bloodstream infection can safely switch from intravenous (IV) antibiotics to oral pills within 72 hours, instead of continuing IV therapy. Researchers will compare death rates and other outcomes at 30 and 90 days. The goal is to see if early oral treatment works just as well, while potentially reducing hospital stays and costs.
