Simple breathing workout may ease muscle disease symptoms

NCT ID NCT07274267

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a daily 3-month breathing exercise program can improve strength and daily function in people with inflammatory myopathy, a rare autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness. Thirty-three adults will use a handheld device at home to strengthen their breathing muscles. Researchers will measure changes in breathing strength, lung function, fatigue, and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Inspiratory muscle training (breathing exercises using a handheld device)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to improve breathing strength and daily function for people with inflammatory myopathy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 33 people. The training is home-based, so results may vary. It targets symptoms, not the disease itself.
