Hidden danger: deadly fungus strikes flu patients in ICU

NCT ID NCT07330986

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study reviewed records from 542 adults in 20 ICUs across China who had severe flu (Influenza A) and breathing failure. Researchers divided patients into those who also developed a fungal lung infection (aspergillosis) and those who did not, to understand risk factors and survival rates. The goal is to help doctors spot and treat this dangerous co-infection earlier.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help doctors identify which flu patients are at highest risk for a deadly fungal co-infection, leading to earlier treatment and better survival.

What could go wrong

This is a retrospective (looking back at past records) study, so it can show links but cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to all hospitals or countries.
