Routine stomach checks questioned in ventilator pneumonia study

NCT ID NCT01137487

First seen Apr 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 11, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study looked at whether routinely checking leftover stomach contents (residual volume) in patients on breathing machines affects their risk of developing pneumonia. 452 critically ill adults were randomly assigned to either have their stomach volume checked or not. The goal was to see if skipping this check changes pneumonia rates and feeding delivery.
