Custom dental implant abutment may speed healing and avoid second surgery
NCT ID NCT04449302
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a custom-made healing cap placed right after a molar implant could improve gum and bone healing compared to the standard method of covering the implant. Twenty-two adults with non-restorable lower molars received an immediate implant with either a custom abutment or standard submerged healing. The goal was to see if the custom approach leads to better gum shape and less bone loss, potentially avoiding a second surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
customized healing abutment (dental device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could improve gum healing and reduce the need for a second surgery after immediate dental implants.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 22 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits over standard care are uncertain.
