Eye scan may spot hidden nerve pain in dry eye sufferers

NCT ID NCT05653921

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study aims to see if a special microscope (confocal microscopy) can reliably detect tiny nerve growths (microneuromas) that may be a sign of neuropathic corneal pain. Researchers will scan the eyes of 438 adults with dry eye or corneal disease to check if these nerve findings are consistent over time. The goal is to create a standard way to diagnose this often-missed pain condition.
