Doctors test new talk strategy to stop unhelpful ICU treatments

NCT ID NCT04181294

Summary

This study tested if a new communication strategy could reduce aggressive, unhelpful treatments for very sick patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Doctors and families agreed to try treatments for a set time to see if the patient improved, aiming to avoid prolonged suffering. The goal was to see if this approach shortened ICU stays and reduced intense treatments without changing whether patients survived their hospital stay.
