Dye during thyroid surgery may prevent lifelong calcium problems

NCT ID NCT04785443

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tests whether using a green dye (ICG) during total thyroid removal surgery helps surgeons see and protect the tiny parathyroid glands. Damage to these glands can cause dangerously low calcium levels, sometimes requiring lifelong medication. The trial will compare 242 adults having thyroid surgery: half will get the dye, half will not, to see if the dye reduces low calcium rates right after surgery.
