Cold or heat: which helps more when a drain is pulled?
NCT ID NCT07408921
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether applying an ice pack or a warm gel pad to the drain site before removal can lower anxiety, improve comfort, and stabilize vital signs in patients recovering from open urological surgery. 120 adults will be randomly assigned to ice, warm gel, or standard care. The goal is to find a simple, drug-free way to improve the patient experience during this common procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ice pack and warm gel pad
What this could lead to
If effective, these simple, low-cost methods could become standard practice to make drain removal less stressful and more comfortable for patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (120 participants) testing temporary comfort measures, not a treatment for a disease. Results may not apply to all surgeries or patients.
