Online therapy aims to calm the fear of heart trouble when the heart is fine
NCT ID NCT06136494
First seen Aug 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 28, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Many people with chest pain that is not caused by a heart problem still worry that something is wrong with their heart. This anxiety can lead them to avoid activities and seek repeated medical help. Researchers are testing an 8-week guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) program to help these individuals rethink their fears and reduce cardiac anxiety. The trial includes 126 participants with non-cardiac chest pain and high cardiac anxiety, comparing the therapy to an attention control. The study measures changes in anxiety, quality of life, and healthcare costs, and explores how personality traits affect the therapy's success.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this online therapy could offer a practical way to reduce cardiac anxiety and improve quality of life for people with non-cardiac chest pain, potentially cutting unnecessary healthcare visits.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial, and the therapy may not work for everyone. Some participants might find it hard to engage with online sessions, and the benefits may not last long-term.
