Can metformin or hydroxyurea cut transfusions for thalassemia patients?
NCT ID NCT06606886
First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated Apr 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested two drugs—hydroxyurea and metformin—in 96 people with transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia to see if they could reduce the need for blood transfusions and boost fetal hemoglobin. Participants took one of the drugs daily for a year. The goal was to find a safer, more effective way to manage the disease and understand which genetic profiles respond best.
